this is my art
For my landscape artwork, I plan on doing a depiction of Darth Vader's castle from Star Wars. It will be on top of some mountains with lava flowing out from the castle and into a small lava stream below. My inspiration came from a photo online that I saw and Jaden told me to do it so I am. As of right now I have two sketches in my sketchbook for a few ideas of how I want to create the artwork and I am ready to start making it on a canvas. For my inspiration I am using Observe and Stretch & Explore. I am observing a lot of the details from the inspiration photo and figuring out how I am going to create them and I am also exploring outside of my comfort zone because it is a type of art style that I usually don't try doing because it involves making the art look somewhat realistic. I usually stay away from stuff like that because I don't ever really think that I can pull it off well.

With these technique exercises, I was able to work on the Develop Craft and Observe studio habits of mind. Throughout these different exercises, I worked on Develop Craft by having learned different ways of mixing colors using acrylic paint, which colors are the easiest to mix and which ones are the hardest, how to make watercolors brighter or darker, how to make them flow more or less, and different ways of applying both acrylic and watercolors. I didn't know how to do those things beforehand but in doing this painting boot camp, I was able to figure those things out and learn from experiencing it opposed to just hearing about how to do it. I also worked on Observe by not only seeing how to do all these different things, but seeing how I could apply them to different artworks that I'll make in the future and seeing which ones to use when.My artwork is a drawing of my laptop with the back end facing towards the viewer. On the laptop there is a Sly Cooper logo sticker in the middle of the top face of the laptop. There is also a pair of earbuds that are plugged in and splayed on top of the laptop with the earbuds themselves crossing over each-other to form a curvy "x" shape. I made this artwork using pencil and drawing my laptop by eye. I first started out by drawing it in my sketchbook to see how I wanted it to look. After getting the look that I wanted, I started to re-draw it onto a final piece of paper. However, after drawing it I didn't like the way it looked because it didn't match my original sketch and I liked my original sketch more. To get around this issue, I used onion skin to trace my original sketch from my sketchbook and transferred the graphite onto a different piece of paper. It worked, but the lines were a little faint so I drew back over them to make all of them darker and more visible. My idea behind this artwork was to show balance while also making the drawing about something that I'm interested in. So, I chose my laptop because I love technology and my laptop is a huge part to my everyday life. I also chose to use my earbuds as the balance because it works really well with the laptop and because it symbolizes how much I love music and how music is also a major part of my everyday life. My goal for this artwork was to improve my drawing/sketching skills by drawing semi-complicated objects. I have wanted to improve my drawing skills for a long time and the best way to do so is to practice and challenge yourself when you practice, so that's what I set out to do with this artwork. Overall, I actually like how my artwork turned out. I obviously know that there are a handful of mistakes in the drawing, however it is much much better than I originally thought it was going to be. I'm not bothered that it's not hyper-realistic because the fact that it just largely looks like my laptop and earbuds is a big win for me. During the process of making this artwork I worked on the express and observe Studio Habits of Mind. I worked on being able to think of ways to create an artwork that conveys a certain meaning and it led me to creating this. I wanted my artwork to show one of the things that I'm most interested in, which is technology. That's why I wanted to make an artwork about my laptop. I also worked on learning to observe more closely to certain details than I did before. In doing so I was able to add in certain details that I normally wouldn't have done like having my earbuds laying in certain directions and having their shapes match to those directions.

I used observe by not only looking at the examples on each guide paper to see what they did, but I also observed by watching a YouTube tutorial and seeing each step to creating the final product. I also used engage and persist by taking what I observed previously from both the guide papers and the YouTube tutorial and using that to try re-creating the art myself in my sketchbook. |
