this is my art
The three artists that I looked at were Ekua Holmes, Xue Song, and Hannah Hoch. Ekua's and Xue's artworks are pretty similar to each other. They both use colored paper to make semi-realistic collages. Eka's art has more detail because Xue's art is more focused on a silhouette-type style of art. Hannah's artworks are not only completely different from the other two, but it's also horrifying. She uses pictures of people and animals and meshes them together to form nightmarish creations, like a human face as the body of a bird or a monkey with half of it's face being human and it having an enormous human hand. Below I have one example pf each artist's artworks, going in the order of how they are listed above. After that I have a progress photo and my final photo of the collage that I did. Overall I don't really like how mine turned out. To me it just doesn't look good but that's also because I am not good with collage. Not being good at it while also not really liking collage in the first place were the main struggles that I faced while making this artwork. I would rather use drawing and painting as my art form because it's much more enjoyable to work with than glue and paper. However one thing that was successful for me was that my artwork makes people wonder what exactly it is and that's what I was going for. I wanted to just create something that was weird and a little unsettling and I feel like my final artwork is. One thing I learned from looking at other collage artists is that it takes an extremely long time to make it look good, maybe as long or even longer than painting/drawing.

My artwork is a landscape painting depicting Darth Vader's castle. His castle is tall and black with the top of the building forming two prongs. His castle is sitting on top of a wall of black mountains with the top surface of the mountains being very rough and jagged with a couple of spots jutting up. I created these by drawing out the outline of them with pencil and then painting the insides with black and a little bit of gray in some spots. Inside the mountains are a few spots of lava that are showing through the surface. I made these by first painting a few white spots in the mountains and then painted orange on top of those white spots. I then used an exacto-knife to put small dots of yellow and red in the orange to make a small splatter pattern. At the base of the castle there is a stream of lava that is pouring out from it and flowing across the ground in a zig-zag pattern. To make this I first drew the outline with pencil and taped around the edges. Then I painted white on the inside and then orange on top of the white. After that I used a toothbrush to make a splatter pattern of red and yellow across the whole stream. The background of the entire painting is a black-to-light gray gradient and there is an imperial shuttle flying next to the castle. To do this I put globs of black and white paint all over the canvas, going from more black to more white as I went down. Then I smeared all the paint together using a pallet knife and brushed it all together using a very large paintbrush. To make the imperial shuttle I just used an ink pen and free-hand drew the three lines. My main idea behind my artwork was to create a landscape that I thought I would enjoy looking at when I was done. When I was researching different kinds of landscapes, none of the typical styles and types really appealed to me. When I started looking at landscapes that were dark and filled with lava, I knew that that was the kind that I wanted to make. That led me to a landscape picture of Darth Vader's castle and Jaden said I should do that one, so I did. My goals for this artwork was to create my landscape as close to my inspiration image as I possibly could. I wanted to challenge myself by going for an artwork that was somewhat realistic while using paint instead of just drawing because that's harder to do. Overall I like my artwork. I am proud that I was able to use some different techniques that I have never used before like using the toothbrush to make splatter patterns for the lava and making a gradient for a background. I would have liked my gradient to have gone to a lighter gray than it did, but I'm still proud of it. The one thing that I think I could have done better was making the ground below the mountains because I feel like it doesn't look that much like ground. I feel like I could have made that a little nicer and more realistic, but it's a learning experience that I can use for when I create my next artwork. For my landscape artwork, I plan on doing a depiction of Darth Vader's castle from Star Wars. It will be on top of some mountains with lava flowing out from the castle and into a small lava stream below. My inspiration came from a photo online that I saw and Jaden told me to do it so I am. As of right now I have two sketches in my sketchbook for a few ideas of how I want to create the artwork and I am ready to start making it on a canvas. For my inspiration I am using Observe and Stretch & Explore. I am observing a lot of the details from the inspiration photo and figuring out how I am going to create them and I am also exploring outside of my comfort zone because it is a type of art style that I usually don't try doing because it involves making the art look somewhat realistic. I usually stay away from stuff like that because I don't ever really think that I can pull it off well. With these technique exercises, I was able to work on the Develop Craft and Observe studio habits of mind. Throughout these different exercises, I worked on Develop Craft by having learned different ways of mixing colors using acrylic paint, which colors are the easiest to mix and which ones are the hardest, how to make watercolors brighter or darker, how to make them flow more or less, and different ways of applying both acrylic and watercolors. I didn't know how to do those things beforehand but in doing this painting boot camp, I was able to figure those things out and learn from experiencing it opposed to just hearing about how to do it. I also worked on Observe by not only seeing how to do all these different things, but seeing how I could apply them to different artworks that I'll make in the future and seeing which ones to use when. |
