this is my art
My artwork is a landscape painting depicting Darth Vader's castle. His castle is tall and black with the top of the building forming two prongs. His castle is sitting on top of a wall of black mountains with the top surface of the mountains being very rough and jagged with a couple of spots jutting up. I created these by drawing out the outline of them with pencil and then painting the insides with black and a little bit of gray in some spots. Inside the mountains are a few spots of lava that are showing through the surface. I made these by first painting a few white spots in the mountains and then painted orange on top of those white spots. I then used an exacto-knife to put small dots of yellow and red in the orange to make a small splatter pattern. At the base of the castle there is a stream of lava that is pouring out from it and flowing across the ground in a zig-zag pattern. To make this I first drew the outline with pencil and taped around the edges. Then I painted white on the inside and then orange on top of the white. After that I used a toothbrush to make a splatter pattern of red and yellow across the whole stream. The background of the entire painting is a black-to-light gray gradient and there is an imperial shuttle flying next to the castle. To do this I put globs of black and white paint all over the canvas, going from more black to more white as I went down. Then I smeared all the paint together using a pallet knife and brushed it all together using a very large paintbrush. To make the imperial shuttle I just used an ink pen and free-hand drew the three lines. My main idea behind my artwork was to create a landscape that I thought I would enjoy looking at when I was done. When I was researching different kinds of landscapes, none of the typical styles and types really appealed to me. When I started looking at landscapes that were dark and filled with lava, I knew that that was the kind that I wanted to make. That led me to a landscape picture of Darth Vader's castle and Jaden said I should do that one, so I did. My goals for this artwork was to create my landscape as close to my inspiration image as I possibly could. I wanted to challenge myself by going for an artwork that was somewhat realistic while using paint instead of just drawing because that's harder to do. Overall I like my artwork. I am proud that I was able to use some different techniques that I have never used before like using the toothbrush to make splatter patterns for the lava and making a gradient for a background. I would have liked my gradient to have gone to a lighter gray than it did, but I'm still proud of it. The one thing that I think I could have done better was making the ground below the mountains because I feel like it doesn't look that much like ground. I feel like I could have made that a little nicer and more realistic, but it's a learning experience that I can use for when I create my next artwork.
